Where to Live in Mallorca if You're Moving with Children

Where to Live in Mallorca if You're Moving with Children

If you're planning a move to Mallorca with kids, chances are you're not just looking for a beautiful house. You’re looking for somewhere that feels safe, has a good school nearby, plenty of green space to burn off energy, and activities that keep the whole family happy.

The good news? Mallorca has plenty of areas that tick those boxes. Here are a few places families are loving right now and why they work so well when you're raising children on the island.

Santa Maria del Camí and Alaró

These two inland towns are becoming a firm favourite for international families. There's a real sense of community here, with local cafés where people know your name and Saturday markets that make grocery shopping feel like a day out.

Cycling is huge in this part of the island. There are family-friendly bike tracks winding through vineyards and almond groves, and it’s not unusual to see kids riding home from school on two wheels. Both towns are just a short drive to some of the island’s most established international schools, and they’re well connected to Palma by the TIB bus routes if you're commuting or heading into the city for activities.

There are also tennis courts, local football teams, and outdoor swimming groups that meet weekly. It’s a slower pace of life, but not too quiet. Just enough to feel settled.

Portals Nous

If you want the ease of being by the coast with top schools nearby, Portals is a great option. Families love it here because everything is within easy reach, the international schools, the beach, the marina, the shops. It’s polished, but not pretentious.

There’s also a strong expat network in the area, which can be really helpful when you're settling in. Kids tend to get involved in paddle tennis, sailing clubs, and even volleyball sessions down by the water in summer. The vibe here is friendly and active, and there’s a lot going on for all ages.

Palma suburbs: Genova, Son Espanyolet and Bonanova

If you’d rather be closer to the city, there are some great family friendly neighbourhoods just outside central Palma. Places like Genova and Bonanova offer hillside living with sea views, while Son Espanyolet has a slightly more bohemian feel with easy access to schools and parks.

You’re close to cinemas, language schools, sports centres and plenty of after-school activities. There are also cycle paths running from Palma all the way out past El Arenal, making it easy to get around by bike.

For families who want a mix of culture, convenience and walkability, this part of the island makes day to day life easy and enjoyable.

Sa Cabaneta and Marratxí

Just 15 minutes from Palma, this area offers brilliant value for families who want space without moving too far from the city. You’ll find larger houses with gardens, quiet streets, and good local schools.

It’s a great option if you're looking for a more residential feel, with parks, football pitches, and a large sports centre nearby. The TIB bus service runs regularly into Palma, and the train from Marratxí is another bonus for teens who want some independence.

You’re also really close to Festival Park, which has cinemas, outlet shopping and indoor play zones; ideal for rainy weekends.

Llucmajor and the South

If you're craving space and privacy but still want to be within easy reach of Palma or the airport, Llucmajor and the surrounding villages are worth a look. The area has grown in popularity with families who want a bit more land, fewer tourists, and the chance to live a bit more off the beaten path.

There are swimming pools, padel courts, and local kids’ sports groups, plus beautiful beaches like Es Trenc just a short drive away. This part of the island has a more relaxed, back-to-nature feel, but it’s far from isolated.

What to keep in mind when choosing where to live

Each family is different. Some want to be within walking distance of school. Others are happy to drive a bit further in exchange for outdoor space and peace.

Access to sports, school bus routes, after-school clubs, and even things like bike tracks or whether there's a local kids' volleyball group. All these things make a difference in daily life. That’s why it’s worth spending time in each area before you decide.
